Digital Career Compass (DCC)

Since 1974, Computer Technologies Program (CTP), a 501©(3) nonprofit, has provided workforce development for people with disabilities. We have delivered over 1 million direct service hours and helped thousands find careers, succeed in advanced training, and develop the personal and professional skills needed to make progress toward greater independence.

Peer-led model

CTP is uniquely peer-led: 71% of our staff are program graduates with disabilities. We have navigated the same barriers our participants face, giving us a unique understanding of their experiences and allowing us to provide support grounded in both professional expertise and lived experience.

The program

The Digital Career Compass provides participants with an individualized career assessment and counseling, digital skills evaluation, career exploration, identification of transferable skills, and development of individualized goals to make progress toward employment. DCC is designed to meet people where they are and help them understand how their existing abilities and interests can translate into realistic future employment opportunities. CTP delivers its programs remotely through real-time, instructor-led classes, making DCC accessible to participants regardless of where they live in California.

Results so far

Of the 38 DCC participants who completed an anonymous end-of-assessment evaluation, 95% rated the program as helpful and 89% reported gaining insights into their career goals.

The need

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities is just 24.5%, compared to 67.6% for people without disabilities. The unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is more than double that of the general population (8.9% vs. 4.1%). CTP's 50-year history proves that with the right support, encouragement, and skill development, many of these individuals can successfully enter and thrive in the workforce.

Collaboration

CTP actively seeks opportunities to partner with community organizations to recruit prospective DCC participants and provide information about available services. CTP has identified a widespread gap in awareness — among both individuals with disabilities and service providers — regarding employment-focused programs, and participants often lack the preparation or guidance needed to engage effectively with these critical services.

Funding ask

CTP is seeking $100,000 to expand the Digital Career Compass to serve 50 additional people with disabilities throughout California.
